The Hurdle of Translating Military Experience

When Joe retired from the Army, he wasn’t going to settle for “starting over” in a job that was a placeholder or a means to begin a civilian job from stage 1. He knew he had skills from his time in the service. The age-old issue for many before him and those joining him of - "where do I start and how do I translate these skills?” comes to mind.

It was this question that led Joe to Still Serving Veterans. He was paired with fellow Army Veteran, Steve Hartley.

Like all job searches, they started with the resume. Formatting it in a way that gets through the various resume screening platforms as well as translating Joe’s military skills.

“We had an in-depth discussion over Teams on how to apply specific terms for specific jobs into an already pre-built resume. I was also given some great tips and education on techniques for job interviews,” said Joe.

For some, the assistance provided above, may have been enough. It’s certainly a starting point. However, SSV and its all-Veteran counselors are not only prepared, but will be available to guide Veterans through the various steps in the hiring process.

“I was very pleased with the results as Steve was very proactive with checking in on me and providing me with new techniques. I was quickly hired to a new job just a few weeks after retirement,” Joe said of his experience.

Joe retired as a 1SG and is now a Traffic Management Center Operations Manager for Parsons Corporation.

“SSV truly cares for the Veteran. I appreciate all they did for me and my family,” he added.

SSV provides its services at no-cost to Veterans and their spouses. The Call of Duty Endowment allows SSV to cover staffing and counseling costs, taking any additional stressors off the backs of Veterans all over the U.S.
