Workshops and Veteran to Veteran Interactions During the Transition

Daniel's Journey from the Army to Civilian Life

Transitioning from military to civilian life can be a daunting task, laden with challenges that often feel insurmountable. For Daniel, a retired Sergeant First Class from the United States Army, the transition seemed like navigating through a wilderness of uncertainty. However, with the assistance of Still Serving Veterans (SSV), Daniel not only found his path but also landed a meaningful job that resonated with his passion for service.

"My biggest challenges were trying to turn my Military experience into a civilian resume or capturing the right terminology to portray my civilian equivalency," Daniel shares. This struggle is a common hurdle, if not THE barrier for many veterans, as they seek to translate their extensive skills and experiences into a language that resonates with civilian employers.

Daniel's journey took a pivotal turn when he attended the Navigating the Wilderness Workshop hosted by Still Serving Veterans. "I came to Still Serving Veterans for resume assistance and workshops they offered in resume writing and interviewing," he recalls. The personalized, one-on-one approach adopted by SSV resonated with Daniel, as it was tailored to support his specific goals.

The workshops, offered both in-person and virtual, offered Daniel invaluable insights into crafting a compelling resume and honing his interviewing skills. "My last class was on resume writing, and it helped me when applying for this job," he remarks. This hands-on assistance proved to be instrumental in Daniel's job search journey.

Today, Daniel serves as an assistant project officer in contracting at Fort Benning for the Maneuver Battle Lab. His role involves coordinating the transportation of new ammunition, weapons, and equipment for Soldier testing, potentially benefiting units across the Military. "My favorite part is working with Soldiers still. I can continue my service in other forms of capacity and testing new equipment that might be bought by the Military to benefit Soldiers in the future," Daniel proudly states.

Reflecting on his experience, Daniel expresses, "I am presently surprised at how easy the transition was by doing all the classes and courses that Still Serving Veterans offered." This sentiment underscores the importance of organizations like SSV in facilitating a smoother transition for veterans, ensuring they find meaningful employment opportunities aligned with their skills and aspirations.

Connecting Veterans for Success

In SSV’s eyes, Daniel's story shows the importance of Veterans connecting with fellow Veterans and accessing tailored resources through organizations like Still Serving Veterans. By participating in no-cost workshops and leveraging the support of SSV, Daniel not only overcame the challenges of transitioning but also found a fulfilling career path that allows him to continue serving his country in a different capacity.

As Daniel's journey illustrates, the benefits of attending in-person and virtual workshops extend far beyond acquiring job-seeking skills; they foster a sense of community and camaraderie among Veterans, creating a support network that empowers individuals to thrive in their post-military lives.

For veterans navigating the transition to civilian employment, the guidance and resources provided by organizations like Still Serving Veterans can make all the difference. By leveraging these opportunities for growth and connection, Veterans can embark on a new chapter of their lives with confidence and purpose.
