How do you build a new life after the military?
The biggest challenges Alan faced when looking for a job after leaving the military was trying to figure out what to do with his life. He knew that he wanted to keep working, but he wanted more, he wanted to find a career and a purpose.
Still Serving Veterans stepped in and provided morale phone checks, resume creating assistance, loaned him “What Color is Your Parachute” 2020 and provided “absolutely amazing discussions with Eric Brew and Charles Livings” that helped to guide his job search and more importantly open new career paths.
Like many Veterans, trying to secure a job after years, or decades of service is very stressful. The stress impacted both Alan and his wife as well. They were starting to tap into their savings so that they could continue living their normal lifestyle. The job search provided lots of no’s and no call backs, and COVID definitely had a vote on employment possibilities.
COVID-19s impact on the job search. Alan had to learn how to use the suite of VTC software in order to conduct virtual job interviews, rather than meeting with associates at public places. He believes the industry struggles with what can be done via telework. The thought of no more large in person conferences, and having to decide what jobs are critical and what can go away, as payroll continued, made the opportunities less than favorable due to lack of new jobs that were being filled during the early part of COVID.
But with the assistance of Kim Wood sharing so many job postings, and encouragement by Charles, he continued to apply to the positions that he knew he was a good fit for. Eventually Alan’s hard work paid off. He is now in the Defense Industry as a Science and Technology Integrator. He is grateful for Still Serving Veteran’s team in Phenix City for their personal assistance.
