From Uniform to Civilian Success: Bradford B.’s Career Transition Journey

Where do I start, how do I get there?

“Should I work at a small, private company or a large, publicly traded firm?  What about a civilian government job?  Contractor?  And what is the job title of what I want to do?  I knew what I wanted the impact of my work to be, but I didn't know how to look for the job openings that fit my goals.”

After more than two decades of serving his country as an Army Foreign Area Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Bradford B. was ready for a new mission: life after military service. But stepping into civilian life wasn’t as straightforward as he expected.

“I could literally choose any career field I wanted… but the options were overwhelming. I knew the kind of impact I wanted to have—but didn’t know how to find the job titles or companies that aligned with that vision.”

Like many veterans, Bradford faced the paradox of too many options and not enough clarity. Should he join a private company? Work for the government? Become a contractor? The freedom of choice came with a new kind of pressure—making the right one.

That’s when Still Serving Veterans (SSV) stepped in.

Bradford began his journey with SSV through a workshop designed to align his values, skills, and goals. From there, one-on-one counseling sessions helped refine his job search strategy, prioritizing what mattered most: context, culture, colleagues, and compensation.

But the support didn’t stop there. With SSV’s guidance, Bradford:

  • Created a targeted resume that got callbacks

  • Mastered LinkedIn networking through engaging webinars

  • Gained confidence through interview prep that led to multiple offers

“Still Serving Veterans provided me critical services to narrow my job search to openings that I was already qualified for and fit my values, both in the work and the company culture. The personalized service made me feel that my situation was a priority and that I would find success in my search.”

Today, Bradford has found his perfect fit as an Assessment, Monitoring, and Evaluation Analyst in Government Contracting. It’s a role that utilizes his skills, honors his values, and allows him to continue making a meaningful impact—this time in civilian life.

Thanks to SSV, he didn’t just land a job—he launched a new chapter with purpose.
