“My biggest challenge was not really understanding that I needed to network with other people who had already gone through the transition.” - Amber – US Air Force
Amber needed to talk to other Veterans who could empathize with her challenge of transitioning from a military career to a civilian career. SSV’s Veteran Counselors were able to offer her that exact kind of assistance and share what worked for them.
When Amber decided to separate from the Air Force, she really didn’t know what was next for her career. She wasn't sure what kind of job she wanted or what resources were available. She was also hesitant to ask for help. She overcame that reluctance and reached out to SSV.
“I had to ‘get over the ask,’ and reach out to my community, to find out about those resources that were truly available to me, to assist me in my next great adventure.”
Amber was connected to a Veteran Career Counselor and given resume writing assistance, LinkedIn Profile Webinars, and regular job distribution of positions that fit her needs. She was also introduced to the idea of remote roles as a valid job opportunity. This would allow for more flexibility to prioritize her health care, addressing service connected disabilities while staying committed to the job.
Military expertise is often hard to translate on a civilian job resume. Amber already had the skills she needed to land the right job. She just needed the confidence to articulate those skills to potential employers.
SSV followed up with Amber regularly to make sure she had the resources that she needed and to provide her with available job opportunities that fit her needs. She was inspired by the help she received from SSV. The encouragement she received from other Veterans made a lasting impression that became a motivation for her new career. Amber chose to pursue her passion of helping the military community and eventually landed her dream job as a Military and Veteran Family Advocate, and she couldn't be happier.
“This great team LOVES what they do, and really helped me to see that I could also pursue my passion of helping our Military Community.” - Amber – US Air Force

Still Serving Veterans' primary mission is to offer no-cost career and transition counseling services that help Veterans build rewarding careers and meaningful lives. This is done by meeting the Veteran where they are on their journey. It’s easy to connect with the Counselors because they are also Veterans themselves and know the challenges of transitioning into the civilian world.
