Be Open to Having “Areas to Improve” as you Leave the Military

Aaron R. left the military as an Army SGT. As he transitioned out, his chief concern was his network. Aaron understood that networking and having a network could greatly improve his career prospects both as he left the military and somewhere down the road.

In connecting with Still Serving Veterans (SSV), Aaron was paired with Stephen Hartley, a former Army Paratrooper, who worked in sales after his transition and now gives back to Veterans through career counseling at SSV.

While Aaron went into this with a concern centered on networking, one thing he highlights most in his work with SSV was actually insight he gained about the job interview process.

“Mr. Hartley advised and instructed (me) as to the best ways to present during an interview with 100% success rate,” said Aaron, who has since landed a job as a Logistics Management Analyst.

A critical tip here - the military transition is different for everyone. You may hear XYZ from the people you serve (served) with. While it is important to share information and best practices, keep an open mind when it comes to your own transition to the civilian world. As Aaron would agree with, be open to learning skills and insight about modern and ever-evolving HR/hiring practices. You may be solely focused on improving your network, but along the way you may find you underestimated what you should do, and know about, when interviewing for the job you want.

You don’t want to waste your time with your first few jobs out of the service. Don’t settle and be sure to try and obtain a family supporting job that best utilizes your skillsets.

“SSV greatly attributed to the success of obtaining my position and is an awesome avenue available for Veterans. I highly encouraged Veterans to take advantage of this service,” said Aaron.

SSV helps Veterans and transitioning service members with resumes, job search strategies, mock interviews, salary negotiations and other workshops centered around career advancement and the overall job search. Everything is free and you will always work with a fellow Veteran!
