Meet Your Counselor - Steve Hartley

Steve Hartley, Veteran Career & Transition Counselor | US Army, Retired

1.      Tell us a little about yourself and your background.

I am a medically retired Army Staff Sergeant with a background in sales, administration, and small team leadership.

 

2.      What is your military background? And did you attend any additional college or educational courses?

I was a communications specialist and fueler in the Army.

 

3.      What inspired you to join Still Serving Veterans?

I believed in the mission. I enjoy helping people and making a difference in my community.

 

4.      What does a typical day look like for you at SSV?

For me, it is sorting out administrative tasks. I also working with clients from time to time.

 

5.      What do you find most rewarding about your work here?

Seeing others that we helped succeed.

 

6.      In your experience, what’s the biggest challenge veterans face when transitioning to civilian life?

Confusion on what they should do and how to start moving toward their goals once they realize what that is.

 

7.      What advice would you give a veteran who’s hesitant to seek support?

Take advantage of all services available to you. They cost nothing and can offer something that you may have not realized was available.

 

8.      What are your hobbies or interests outside of work?

Lifting weights, running, reading, going to Mass and volunteering at church events

 

9.      Finally, what does “Still Serving Veterans” mean to you?

It means doing everything possible to help our veteran community.
