REAL CHALLENGES. REAL SUPPORT.

The Challenges our Veterans face

Understanding the obstacles Veterans encounter when transitioning to civilian life — and how Still Serving Veterans helps them overcome each one.

Challenge 1: Securing Employment

Securing Employment

Guiding Veterans and transitioning service members into civilian life through workshops, resume building, job search strategies, interview preparation, and career mentoring.

Securing employment is the first and biggest concern after leaving the Armed Forces.

Where do you even begin?  What type of job interests you? What kind of salary do you need to support your family?  Is there any help I can get in securing a new job, where do I find it and how do I approach them?

The questions are big and there are a lot of them.

Many Veterans have wide-ranging ideas about possible paths—from skilled trades to project management and beyond. It can feel like leaving high school and entering the workforce for the first time, not even knowing what’s out there.

Where do I begin? What skills do I need? Will the salary meet the needs of me and my family? What benefits or compensation will I get in the different jobs I’m considering

Even highly qualified, senior-ranking personnel don’t necessarily find comparable compensation in civilian roles.

Choosing a Career Path

Not knowing what to do next is common—many Veterans aren’t sure what’s out there or how their skills transfer.

Communicating in Civilian Terms

Translating military experience into civilian language—on a resume, in interviews, and at work—can be difficult.

Our clients are used to a very specific way of life, a chain of command, and a language that belongs to the Armed Forces.

The civilian world is different, requiring an entirely new and unfamiliar way of communicating.

Still Serving Veterans Helps By

Providing one-on-one career counseling, resume guidance, and job placement support designed specifically for Veterans. We help translate military experience into civilian language, identify transferable skills, and connect Veterans with employers who value their service and expertise.

Challenge 2: Benefits & Financial Stability

Navigating Complex Disability Benefits

Accessing the disability benefits you’ve earned is often confusing and time-consuming.

Understanding and applying for the VA’s disability benefits can be very challenging.

Requirements aren’t always clear, the paperwork is extensive, and many Veterans don’t know exactly what they qualify for or where to start.

Having been used to steady pay and benefits in the Armed Forces, finding something comparable can be challenging—especially when family or health issues add pressure.

Financial Instability

Leaving a stable military income can create uncertainty and financial stress for Veterans and their families.

Compensation Reality Check

Senior-ranking experience doesn’t always translate to comparable civilian compensation.

Highly qualified, senior-ranking military personnel don’t necessarily have access to the same levels of compensation in civilian roles, which can complicate planning and expectations during transition.

Still Serving Veterans Helps By

Through our Huntsville, AL office, our Veteran Service Officers (VSOs) help local and Northern Alabama Veterans and their families—at no cost—understand the VA benefits they’ve earned and complete the claim forms needed to access them.

VSOs assist with disability compensation, pension claims, and aid-and-attendance allowances, and can identify other services or sources of financial support.

Challenge 3: Resources, Support & Wellbeing

Hard-to-Find Resources

Finding trustworthy resources—from healthcare and training to community support—can feel impossible.

Locating the right resources is tough. Many Veterans and their families don’t know where to look or how to evaluate what’s available across government programs, nonprofits, and private initiatives.

Assumptions about an easy transition can collide with reality: different workplace culture, communication styles, and expectations that take time to learn and navigate.

Not as Easy as Some Might Think

Transitioning to civilian life is often harder than expected—even for Veterans who’ve worked alongside civilians.

Facing Uncertainty

When employment, finances, and uncertainty pile up, the emotional toll can become overwhelming.

Sometimes all of the above can send people into a downward spiral. Finding someone who understands the life you’ve lived and relates to the challenges you’re facing is critical.

Still Serving Veterans Helps By

We help Veterans regain confidence, rediscover purpose, and take the next step toward a secure, fulfilling future.
