Please join The Birmingham VA & UAB's Alabama AHEC (Area Health Education Center) for our annual mental health summit! This year's theme is suicide prevention. We will be hearing from Dr. Judith Harrington, Ph.D., LPCSLPC,LMFT on suicide assessment and intervention as well as postvention strategies.
Dr. Harrington has been in private practice since 1988. She has also been a friend to the Crisis Center in Birmingham since 1983 where she has served in many roles including clinical director and trainer to over 200 volunteers. She has been active with the Suicide Prevention Task Force since 2004. In 2007, she was awarded Mental Health Counselor of the Year by the American Mental Health Counselors Association. She is currently working as an Associate Professor and coordinator of the Couples, Marriage and Family Track at The University of Montevallo.

We will round out the afternoon with a presentation by Officer James Campbell to hear about his personal military experience and how that relates to his experience as a police officer. Next, we will hear from police officers and crisis negotiators Adam Schniper and Reggie Parker (who is also a mental health therapist) who will share their experiences handling veterans and those with mental health issues in crisis.
To close out the day, UAB's Self Care Studio will present on the importance of self-care and we will all get to put one of their recommendations into practice!
