Following 18 months of Zoom meetings and virtual events, it looks like holiday season 2021 will bring us physically back together again. Whether you typically enjoyed the chance to get out and meet new people (including potential business contacts), or dreaded these social “command performances”, COVID has changed everything.
COVID is still with us, so before attending in-person social events, protect yourself and others by getting fully vaccinated and/or wearing a mask when you aren’t eating or drinking.
I have gotten used to spending more time at home. Even though I am a classic extrovert, energized by spending time with people, I have become comfortable in my new role as a “homebody”. This year you may have to push yourself to take advantage of the opportunities offered and attend as many events as your schedule and budget will allow. These suggestions, pulled from a pre-COVID blogpost, will still help you make the most of the holiday season:
Always have a good supply of easily accessible business cards.
Have cards printed with your contact information if you are unemployed.
Make eye contact and smile, as this will make you more approachable!
Look for someone who is standing alone and ask a question, such as “What is your role with XYZ company?” or “In what branch of the Military did you serve?”
Follow up the next day with potential employers and interesting contacts. Send an email to say you enjoyed meeting them and ask if you can meet in person to learn more about their company or continue the conversation.
If someone says, “Let’s connect after the first of the year”, make a note on your calendar and follow up.
Make it a challenge to make at least one good business contact at every social gathering!
Avoid looking at your phone during events.
Limit alcohol consumption if you want to make a good impression.
In closing, don’t look at business and social events with dread. Take advantage of the opportunity to increase your network of friends and business connections. You never know which connection will be the one that changes your life!
